WP-Drudge v2.3 Releases Today

Yet another release of the WP-Drudge template is coming out today and we’re introducing a lot of new features and fixes. The full list is here and a few highlights are below. A big thanks to all the users who provided feedback through our recent user survey! We’ve got another response to the latest entries coming soon after we take care of the few documentation projects we mentioned.

For current users within the upgrade period of 1 year, you’ll receive the theme package sent to your original payment email with instructions. For those outside of the upgrade period, we’ll send out a discount code to sign up for another year of upgrades within the next day or so.

Add special featured links on the top left

This was a feature we’ve been asked about a lot and made sure to include in 2.3. You can now create a list of links on the top left of your site using Posted or Static links. Just select a category on the Header tab of the options page and the links will appear at the top. There is no inherint limit to the number of links being shown so you may want to create a special category for these.

Image credits and post date display

You can now output an image credit caption below images used in both the link listings and on the individual posted links page. After uploading a featured image, just use the “Caption” field and the text will appear every time the image does. This feature does not work with hot-linked images (the “Link image” field).

Also, you can now display the post date and time on the link listing pages. This setting is on the Other tab of the options page.

More hooks and filters for theme and plugin developers

We’ve been doing a few WP-Drudge custom installs lately and found the need for a lot more hooks and filters in the template. I think we’ve got a great library of them now and everything is listed on the Hooks and Filters page here with in-depth explanations and a plugin sample coming soon.

Ability to change the number of featured items shown

You can now show more than one featured item at the top of link listing pages by changing the number on the Hear tab of the options page.

Logo/header and background image upload plus more fonts

The logo URL and background color fields have been removed from the options page and we’re now using the WordPress core header image and background controller. This makes life much easier for those that need a logo image change or a background image to be displayed. These are covered on their respective settings page and, don’t worry, your current setting will be moved over to this new system. We also added several new font stack options on the Typography tab of the options page. Have fun!

“Featured” flag, outbound URL, and quick edit

On the All Post page, you can now see which Posted Links are featured and what URL they point to. Clicking “Quick Edit” here allows you to change the Featured status along with the rest of WP core publishing options.

Add pagination and threaded comments

We had a couple of user requests for paged posts and threaded comments so we added support for that in this version as well. Paged posts are covered briefly here.

Fixed: loading speed, Google news widget, featured image size, and more

We fixed several user-reported bugs and a few more that we found. We also improved how those link lists were being built to speed up the whole template and create a bit more flexibility.

Questions? Comments? Concerns?

Please contact us here or comment on this post and we’ll explain any of the new changes and fixes. Thanks again and enjoy the new features!

Thanks for this update. A couple things.

    – We upgraded and the 300×250 ad units have disappeared.

    – Archives by month and categories have disappeared, too.

    – Can we include search functionality somewhere on the front page?

Sorry to hear about the trouble there. Just double-check the ad units and make sure they’re in the right place. You might need to re-save them but nothing was deleted out of the theme so it should still be there.

Not sure what you mean by the archives disappearing, that functionality is still present. Did the links disappear? From where? Check your widgets and settings page, you might just need to tweak something.

There is a core WordPress search widget that should work fine.

      Hope that helps!

Can we modify the “Top Link Listing” to show an X amount of links? Drudge will have just one and sometimes several.

…possible to make that an easy variable to update, easily changed like we can with other ones via the widget section?

      Hi Peter,

The Top Link Listing will show all links in a category. To control the amount of links shown, we recommend creating a special category to house all of the links you want to be displayed.

    Hello Josh,

I purchased WP-Drudge v2.2 in August I believe. I don’t believe I ever received the instructions on how to download and upgrade v2.3.

Please forward to me at your earliest opportunity.

Barnar, we automatically send a link to your original purchase email address with download and upgrade instructions. Give a look there (check the spam folder) and let us know if you can’t find it.

I’m trying to find a way to get WPD Ads to work with an app that will help keep track of ad impressions and clicks. I use AdRotate for the rest. So, the Site-top ad I can get into the page using WPD Ads, but I can’t figure out how to track impressions/clicks.

    Any advice?

Jesse … our theme doesn’t provide any click tracking for ads or links (yet, next big version will include it). Impressions should come, generally, from page views and an analytics software, like Google Analytics (there’s a plugin to help install this), will show that. We have a post coming up that walks through some basic click tracking in Google Analytics but it might not work with the ads you’re serving.

      Hope that helps a bit!

Hello! Having a bit of trouble with all 3 of my columns squeezing into mobile. Even after defining a /mobile site with one column – even the single column squeezes … very odd. I’ve killed all the bottom WP-Ads – and even killed the footer and php footer tags ….still all 3 columns continue to ‘respond’and squeeze up. Its one thing to be responsive…! :) What am I overlooking? Cheers …:AW

How can I put 160 x 600 tower ads on the left and right side of post pages.

I would like my layout one banner above the content and one tower on the left of the content and one on the right.

I have one banner above and two banners on the right now but the content gets pushed over to the left side of the page instead of in the middle

We’ve got quite a bit of information on how the advertising runs here:

Right-hand of the post page is fine using widgets but the layout doesn’t support a sidebar on the left side of the content. There are two options for the top of the site, outlined at the link above.
