Fit your WP-Drudge video embeds in any column size

WP-Drudge lets users post videos from YouTube, Vimeo, and other video services. The problem is fitting those videos into the columns on the site. On a fixed width site, you can set the correct width in the embed. But for those who use the fluid width setting, this can be problematic as the videos don’t use the space effectively when they’re very small.

Enter FitVids, an small script that resizes your video embeds to fit in the space that they have automatically. Also, enter the FitVids WordPress plugin. Here’s how to set it up:

  1. Login into your WP-Drudge enabled site and go to Plugins
  2. Click Add New at the top
  3. Type “fitvids” in the search box and click Search Plugins
  4. The first plugin that is shown should be “FitVids for WordPress” (or similar). Click Install Now, then OK to confim.
  5. Once the plugin downloads, click Install Plugin to add it to your WordPress install
  6. Click Activate Plugin to turn it on
  7. Now, go to Appearance > FitVids to show the setup screen
  8. Under the “Enter jQuery Selector” header, you should see a field. Copy the code below and paste into that field:
    .link-col, #single-col
  9. Click the Save Changes button and refresh your homepage to see if that worked. If not, select the check box under the “jQuery” header and click Save Changes again.

After the page loads, you should see the videos resize automatically for both desktop and mobile uses.

As the FitVids Github page will tell you, FitVids works out of the box for:

  • YouTube
  • Vimeo
  • Blip.tv
  • Viddler
  • Kickstarter

If you have any tips or tricks for other WP-Drudge users, go ahead and post them in the support forums, we’d love to hear about it!
